Fireplace Grates : New & Antique

Free standing grates or baskets were used in fireplaces in the early 18th century. Fitted cast iron hob grates were then introduced and in the late 18th century cast iron register grates were first produced, which incorporated register plates within the grate. (A register plate is the flap which can close the flue when not in use, and which had been in use as plate in the flue since the early 17th century ) . In the mid 19th century round or horseshoe register grates were common, whilst the late 19th century is characterised by tiled splays.
