Brass, an alloy of copper and zinc, became popular for ironmongery in the late 18th century, though was widely used for better quality work from the late 17th century. The brass industry was well established in England by the early 18th century, and the development of cheaper production of zinc by the end of the century lowered the price and widen the use of brass. It largely superceded iron in the 19th century for better quality work, particularly for internal ironmongery and front doors.
