A number of companies still make encaustic and geometric floor tiles. They also have expertise in restoring existing floors or reinstating missing elements. Encaustic tiles have an indentation which is filled with coloured, liquid clay slip, which is scrapped back when dry and fired. They were popular as a decorative form of floor tile in the medieval period .Geometric tiles are unglazed tiles cut to geometric shapes to create floor patterns. Both encaustic tiles and geometric tiles were extensively used in the 19th century Gothic Revival for churches, hallways and domestic footpaths.
