Composition, Compo, Pine & Gesso

Robert Adams popularised the use of composition or compo in the late 18th century, as a means of achieve fine detail. It is cast hard putty, which provided decorative elements without the need for woodcarving. These can be added to timber or plasterwork for fireplaces, architraves, picture frames, etc. It is sometimes described as pine and gesso, even though gesso is a different material.
