Disabled Access, Disability Access and Access for All

Access to the historic environment inclusive to all is important. Special care is needed in the case of listed buildings and conservation areas to provide an inclusive approach to accessibility, to meet the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act and the Equalities Act. Illustrated is an example of a retracting stairs by Sesame Access Systems Ltd, who have successfully installed lifts in over 70 properties in UK and Europe, including Grade I and II* Listed Buildings.

Sesame Access Systems platform lifts and retracting stair wheelchair lifts are award-winning disabled access solutions, economical on space, allowing the building to retain its character without compromising access. Our retractable stairs conceal a wheelchair access platform within traditional steps. This blends into the surroundings as the steps can be clad in whatever material matches the building. Ideal for Listed Buildings, such as churches, it is invisible when not in use. Completed projects include the Institution of Civil Engineers, Oxford, Cambridge and Westminster Universities, UK Supreme Court and Apple Stores in Europe. The system is a Design Council Millennium Product.
