Pointing is the external edge of the mortar between the brickwork. Great care is needed to follow the historic pattern of the pointing ushc as penny struck or tuck pointing. Sometimes a recessed joint is used where the arises or edges of the brick are worn through age. Occasionally the pointing has been coloured, black being popular in the late 19th century. Lime mortars are traditional and their softeness and flexibility helps preserve the brickwork, and care is needed in matching the sands, grits and aggregates. Weatherstruck pointing is not suitable for traditional brickwork.
